DATELINE: AVON, MA…

SelecTech, Inc., a leader in the manufacture of innovative flooring products with long-term value and immediate benefits, recently became a member of the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association (SEFA). SelecTech represents the only flooring company in SEFA, which boasts a membership of individuals and companies from all over the world.

According to its website, “The Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association (SEFA) was organized in 1988 to meet the needs of an important industry of lab designers and manufacturers of laboratory furniture. SEFA takes a leadership role in advancing the cause of good laboratory planning. SEFA’s member-directed package of services reflects the importance attached to cost-effective construction and delivery, lab space use, safety, productivity and environmental issues.”

“Part of our interest in being a SEFA member is being involved with an organization that sets the standard for lab requirements,” said Thomas Ricciardelli, president of SelecTech, Inc. “For example, as a flooring company, we abide by the Scientific Equipment & Furniture Association SEFA 8-M-2010 Recommended Practices For Metal Laboratory Grade Furniture, Casework, Shelving and Tables.”

In that document, SEFA lists the 49 chemicals recommended to test for on lab furniture, casework, shelving and tables. While SelecTech routinely tests its lab floorings for many of those same chemicals.

“A chemical that can splash on the floor as easily as any of those surfaces, right? But that does not mean your flooring must past the test for 49 chemicals if you are not using that in your lab,” said Ricciardelli. “It really depends on your comfort level and current and future work being done in your lab. If you think it’s possible your floor could be exposed to a chemical now or down the road, test for it.”

SelecTech’s offering for labs is its FreeStyle BioLock. With its patented interlocking feature, BioLock can be customized for use in hospitals, cleanrooms and labs. Ideal for renovation projects, BioLock eliminates the need for costly floor replacement and downtime.

BioLock also utilizes a water-proof seam sealer that makes tiles liquid-tight but still removable and replaceable. This is a critical feature when you consider that some labs might be using chemicals that could be damaging if spilled and seeps into flooring. This is particularly important to protect the wiring and plumbing that are often underneath a lab’s floor.

Additionally, most medical centers and hospitals house data centers with expensive computer equipment and servers. SelecTech also offers StaticStop ESD flooring products, which are used by a number of facilities with more expensive electronics to reduce static electricity discharge. Those products also utilize interlocking technology for easy installation, maintenance and portability.

“A number of the facilities we’ve worked with over the years use access flooring. This type of floor provides some flexibility should the facility need to accommodate growth or transfigurations. Our interlocking flooring—available in both FreeStyle and StaticStop lines–can be moved from one location to another and easily reinstalled,” said Ricciardelli.

Made with 70 percent recycled materials and 100 percent recyclable, SelecTech flooring products meet CA 1350 Indoor Air Quality and is MAS Certified Green.
